RYSE Hotel - Collection, 2018
Continuing along the lines of the general scope of my work, these artworks begin with tradition as their point of departure, incorporating originally intended meanings and functions of Korean culture, contrasting those with reinterpreted variations of the present, and experimenting with potential future manifestations. This is attempted literally("Face of the Water / Sleep"), figuratively("Original Gaya"), and materially("Fading Landscape", "Star IV") through wordplay in artwork titles, abstract representation, and the juxtaposition of conventional Korean materials (hanji) with unconventional materials and methods such as burning and bleaching. Through these different forms of exploration, I aspire to create something new with something old, or something old with something new. These are my re-imaginings of my mother culture from a perspective which attempts to be simultaneously past, present, and future.
